{"id":4269,"date":"2020-05-20T16:08:37","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T16:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/svmarriagecoun.wpengine.com\/?p=4269"},"modified":"2022-11-17T09:37:48","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T17:37:48","slug":"learning-to-manage-triggers-while-living-with-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/learning-to-manage-triggers-while-living-with-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning to Manage Triggers While Living with Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can love your family members to death, but a lot of us look forward to the independence of being on our own.<\/p>\n<p>For a lot of people, moving out of their parents&#8217; homes, whether it&#8217;s a coming of age decision or for transitions such as college, is a welcome change.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Living with family during the COVID-19 pandemic<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Those who live away for work or college or any reason for that matter are now being forced to grapple with a change in their lives. COVID-19 has caused major disruption and left businesses, colleges, and schools closed for weeks by now, and a few more weeks at least left to go.<\/p>\n<p>For a lot of people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-gb\/moved-home-parents-coronavirus\"><u>this has meant moving back home to their families<\/u><\/a>\u00a0because income is tight, and saving is important, and there&#8217;s no place else to go. Dorms and apartments are emptying out, and cities are shutting down completely.<\/p>\n<p>For others, who still live with family but have work and other commitments outside the home, it&#8217;s equally frustrating to lose that for the time being too.<\/p>\n<p>Dynamics are different now that everyone is sharing a space or living in close quarters. There&#8217;s nowhere to go or much else to do, and while it&#8217;s an excellent time to bond and come together as a family, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heysigmund.com\/family-triggers-mindful-techniques\/\"><u>it can be very triggering in certain ways.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4272\" src=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/couple-talking-on-couch.png\" alt=\"couple talking on couch\" width=\"867\" height=\"1300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/couple-talking-on-couch.png 867w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/couple-talking-on-couch-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/couple-talking-on-couch-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/couple-talking-on-couch-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/couple-talking-on-couch-750x1125.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From anxiety and depression to stress and anger, you&#8217;re likely to feel a range of emotions during this time. Here&#8217;s how you can cope:<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Recognize and acknowledge how you feel<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/wander-woman\/201507\/5-steps-managing-your-emotional-triggers\"><u>Identifying emotional reactions is crucial to progress<\/u><\/a>. Start with your immediate reaction, in its most bodily sense.<\/p>\n<p>Where do you feel it set in? Your stomach? Your jaw? Your fists?<\/p>\n<p>Are your shoulders tensing up, or are you getting a headache?<\/p>\n<p>Do you feel a rush of emotion, or has your breath sped up? Is your pulse racing?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever this might be, practice mindfulness and take a moment to pause your emotional response.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Identify your triggers<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When you reflect instead of reacting, you&#8217;ll be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/intl\/blog\/the-gen-y-psy\/201810\/how-spot-your-emotional-triggers\"><u>identify your triggers better<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Do you feel this way when you&#8217;re asked to do something you don&#8217;t want? Do you feel threatened by someone&#8217;s presence or demands? Are you running on their schedule? Is the lack of privacy affecting your emotional state?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4270\" src=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl.png\" alt=\"woman kissing cheek of girl\" width=\"1880\" height=\"1253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl.png 1880w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl-1024x682.png 1024w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl-1536x1024.png 1536w, https:\/\/cms-staginglink3.com\/aziza-client-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/woman-kissing-cheek-of-girl-750x500.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1880px) 100vw, 1880px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This tends to happen when you&#8217;re with older family members, and the shift in dynamic hasn&#8217;t quite set in. Or if you&#8217;re housebound and can&#8217;t find an outlet for escape.<\/p>\n<p>It might not be your family feeling entitled to your time or person\u2014at least deliberately\u2014so that pause might help avoid conflict and confrontation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Point out external and internal causes <\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes situations and conditions that are outside your control can become triggering; other times, it&#8217;s your own thoughts and emotions that affect you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/lib\/what-is-a-trigger\"><u>Differentiating between what\u2019s internal and external<\/u><\/a>\u00a0can help you decide your next step.<\/p>\n<p>Can you remove yourself from the situation? Or can you recognize that the trigger is not really protecting you at this moment?<\/p>\n<p>If so, decisive action comes next.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Work through your emotions<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Taking a breather to pause and reflect helps significantly, but requires intense work. Introspection, self-honesty, openness, and acceptance of your own role are a part of it.
