Moreover, it\u2019s followed by immense emotional turmoil and the prospect of losing this person.<\/p>\n<p>While healing is probably on your mind, beginning the process is difficult and uncertain. You\u2019re not sure where to begin, and even if you are, it\u2019s hard to come out of your emotional tumult and take the first step. Continue reading for a glimpse into how to start the process and what it\u2019s like.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Give Yourself Space to Reflect<\/h2>\n<p>Before you begin recovering, you need to know what you want from your marriage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1033\">You might find yourself going back and forth between:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1126\">\n<li data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1063\">\n<p data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1063\">\u201cI can\u2019t imagine staying.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1064\" data-end=\"1092\">\n<p data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1092\">\u201cI can\u2019t imagine leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1093\" data-end=\"1126\">\n<p data-start=\"1095\" data-end=\"1126\">\u201cI just want the pain to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1230\">There\u2019s no rush to make a final decision. But beginning to ask yourself honest questions is important:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1363\">\n<li data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1272\">\n<p data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1272\">What do I need right now to feel safe?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1325\">\n<p data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1325\">What would staying and rebuilding require from me?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1363\">\n<p data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1363\">What would leaving require from me?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1642\">This reflection is not about blaming yourself for the affair. It\u2019s about understanding your needs, your boundaries, and whether you have any desire to rebuild this relationship once the initial shock settles. Much of this deeper reflection often happens more safely in therapy.<\/p>\n<h2>Seek Therapy<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1845\">Trying to recover from an affair without support can feel overwhelming. Therapy gives you a structured, safer space to process what happened and decide what you want.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1847\" data-end=\"1910\">For many couples, starting with <strong data-start=\"1879\" data-end=\"1898\">couples therapy<\/strong> is helpful:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"2192\">\n<li data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1979\">\n<p data-start=\"1914\" data-end=\"1979\">You can share what you\u2019ve discovered and how it has affected you.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1980\" data-end=\"2071\">\n<p data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"2071\">Your partner can speak to what led them to the affair and what they\u2019re willing to do now.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2192\">\n<p data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2192\">A therapist can slow down tense conversations, help keep you emotionally safer, and guide you through what comes next.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2194\" data-end=\"2467\">In some situations, <strong data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2236\">individual therapy<\/strong> is also useful \u2013 for you, your partner, or both. You may need space to talk freely without worrying about hurting your partner\u2019s feelings, or you may simply need support stabilizing your nervous system after the shock of betrayal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2469\" data-end=\"2738\">Recovery after infidelity is rarely quick. It often involves uncomfortable truths, difficult conversations, and revisiting painful details. It means you both stay committed to telling the truth, listening, and returning to the conversation with the shared goal of clarity and healing.<\/p>\n<p>Therapy can help structure these conversations so they\u2019re productive instead of destructive.You need to set boundaries and voice your discomfort to your significant other, and they need to reciprocate. This involves asking them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/marriage\"><u>cut off<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the person with whom they had an affair. Clear communication will help adequately address problems and prevent them from growing.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3714\" data-end=\"3751\">Moving Forward \u2013 Together or Apart<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3753\" data-end=\"4016\">Healing after an affair doesn\u2019t always mean staying together. For some couples, recovery means rebuilding trust and creating a more honest, connected relationship.
